NORCO >> The Valley View and Summit girls high school basketball teams took a break Saturday from successful league seasons to play in the Norco Extravaganza.

Valley View prevailed against Summit, defeating the SkyHawks 66-46 at Norco High in the one-day event.

Ari Long and Sandee Heiermann led the Eagles with 25 and 20 points, respectively. Naomi Jackson chipped in with 11 points for Valley View (21-2 overall) and Jaida Jackson had seven.

“We just needed to cut down on our fouls, get some rebounds and stop them from scoring,” Heiermann said. “We had our struggles inside last year, but it’s something we’ve focused on a lot, so we were able to capitalize.”

Heiermann took 10 rebounds and Long eight to also help pace the Eagles, who are 5-0 in the Ivy League.

Led by two buckets apiece by Heiermann and Long, Valley View bolted to an 11-0 lead. The Eagles led 18-8 after one quarter and never trailed.

“We were able to penetrate and then kick it out,” Ari Long said. “I think that we’re in a good place. We’re playing well and we’ve bonded as a team.”

Valley View coach Leigh Ann Long also thought fouls were an issue.

“They shot well from the foul line,” she said of Summit. “They were 13 of 21 overall and about 10 of those came in the first half. We needed to keep them off the line.”

Summit tried an array of defenses, but nothing seemed to work. The Eagles spread the floor and were able to drive or make perimeter shots. Long led the way from outside with four 3-pointers. Heiermann had better success going to the hoop.

“They shot well – better than what we prepared for,” veteran Summit coach LaTrina Duncan said. “It doesn’t matter what defense you play if you don’t move your feet.”

The SkyHawks (13-5) are 4-0 in the Sunkist League. They were led by Laila Walker with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Annisah Moncrief with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

“We’ll watch the film from this game and learn from it,” Duncan said. “It will help us in the post-season.”
