RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Going into Tesoro’s Sea View League game against visiting El Toro on Friday, the Titans’ Matt DeAngelo was fairly certain that the Chargers would try to take away his 3-point shot.
In fact, the senior point guard didn’t make a single 3-pointer. But it really didn’t matter.
DeAngelo didn’t have a problem scoring from other spots on the floor, as he hit 9 of 10 attempts from the free-throw line and grabbed six rebounds in a 60-47 victory for Tesoro.
“It feels good attacking and getting to the rim,” said DeAngelo, who scored a game-high 23 points, including 10 in the first quarter. “You can dish it off from there too.”
Mike Mahlen scored 15 for the Titans (16-3, 2-0) and Kaden Garrett scored 10 and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Steven Guiterrez scored 20 to lead the Chargers (12-5, 1-1).
The victory was the fourth in a row for the Titans, who are ranked No. 16 in CIF-SS Division 2AA.
Both teams played up-tempo styles but had a hard time making shots, especially in the second and third quarters. Neither team scored more than 18 points in a quarter.
“I like the score,” Tesoro coach Steve Garrett said, referring to the relatively low point total for the Chargers “That is a good number for us. We’ve got good teams in our league. Every coach will tell you that it is always going to be a battle.
“El Toro was very, very prepared for us and did a great job and our guys did a good job making adjustments as well.”
Defense has been one of Tesoro’s strengths this season. The Titans held Dana Hills to 32 points in their league opener on Jan. 8, allowed 29 in a 69-29 nonleague victory over Northwood on Dec. 11 and have held opponents under 50 points in seven of 16 games.
Tesoro led 40-29 midway through the third quarter before El Toro got within seven early in the fourth.
Tesoro took a 51-41 lead with 3:50 left in the game, and the Chargers never cut its deficit below double digits the rest of the way.
“I thought down the stretch, all of our seniors took care of the ball,” Garrett said. “They did a better job in the third and fourth quarter just taking care of the ball. Moving around, taking what the defense gives us and just taking care of the ball.”
